My name is Richard "Dick" Seaman, and I'm The Nude Philosopher.
On this website I want to provide clear information about Spiritual Enlightenment - what it is and how to experience it. I do this because I think no topic is more important, for society as a whole, individuals within society and for myself personally. I hope that writing about this topic will help society, other people and myself.
My personal story of Enlightenment is very similar to the stories of many other people. The experience was brief, extremely profound and extremely elusive to recapture, however it did leave behind some unshakeable facts which work as signposts pointing in the right direction:
Alexander the Great built one of the greatest empires of the ancient world, stretching all the way from Greece and Egypt across what is now Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan to India. In India he encountered gymnosophists, nude philosophers, whose wisdom impressed him very much. Alexander was certainly a genius, and he was a good judge of wisdom, since from about the age of 13 he was taught by the philosopher Aristotle.
Alexander and Aristotle both show the value of looking for wisdom wherever it can be found. Aristotle combined his own scientific observations, research and thinking with the philosophy of his teacher Plato, and Plato's teacher Socrates. He studied and wrote about areas as diverse as philosophy, physics, biology, psychology, economics, politics, music, poetry, theater and ethics.
Most people ignore modern philosophy because they feel it offers no practical help to solve global problems like political polarization, nationalism and ecological destruction. Nor does it have anything useful to say about how individuals can deal with relationship difficulties, feelings of personal inadequacy, or any of the other stressful things we experience.
Is it a ridiculous dream to imagine that there are solutions to our personal and global problems, or does real wisdom exist out there, waiting to be found?
The nude philosophers we need today are open, honest and unashamed. They are open about the limitations of their thinking and experience, honest to themselves and others about their own emotions and desires, and unashamed not just of their bodies, but their minds, too. They see good in all things, and seek wisdom wherever it can be found, whether in philosophy, science or religion.
This website investigates a solution to our problems which has been held by religious people across time and around the globe, by people who believe in some sort of God but consider themselves "spiritual but not religious", and even by modern atheists like Barbara Ehrenreich and Sam Harris. This is the state of consciousness sometimes called Spiritual Enlightenment.
In this state of consciousness, a person experiences profound euphoria, a powerful sense of wonder, and complete peace. It is a state entirely free of any stress, but where the person is highly alert and able to think and behave more appropriately than a person who is in the state of ordinary wakefulness. The state is brought about and creates feelings of love, wisdom and power which leave permanent effects in the person who experiences them. It is truly a mind-altering experience, and the only one powerful enough to permanently cure our individual and collective psychological ills.
If Enlightenment seems like heaven, then its opposite is surely hell, and most of us are living in a sort of purgatory somewhere in the middle.
Use the information on this website to take your own journey toward Enlightenment, avoiding the pitfalls which make the experience seem hopelessly inaccessible, or which make some spiritual seekers dysfunctional in their ordinary lives.
